CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON Remake Gets a New Director
Originally Breck Eisner was set to direct the remake of Universal Pictures' Creature of the Black Lagoon. He left the production not too long ago and it looks like a new director has been chosen to take on the creative duties of bringing this iconic creature back to life.
Carl Rinsch is the man that the studio is currently talking to. Here is a guy that really hasn't done much in film, who is mostly known for directing commercials. But he is starting to make a name for himself. He most recently signed on to direct the samurai adventure film 47 Ronin with Keanu Reeves. He was also supposed to direct the new Alien Prequel until Ridley Scott decided that he was going to do it, and now he's up for another high profile directing gig with Creature for the Black Lagoon.
The original 1954 version of the film was actually a 3D movie, and it revolved around a scientific expedition searching for fossils along the Amazon River who discover a prehistoric Gill-Man in the legendary Black Lagoon. The explorers capture the mysterious creature, but it breaks free. The Gill-Man returns to kidnap the lovely Kay, fiancée of one of the expedition, with whom it has fallen in love.
Unlike the other classic Universal Horror monster films like Dracula, The Wolman, Invisible Man, King Kong and The Mummy, which have all been remade several times over the years, this is the first time that the Creature from the Black Lagoon film would be resurrected since the original.
As for what Breack Eisner went on to do next, he will take on the David Cronenberg film The Brood, about a woman who telepathically communicates with her group of mutant children, instructing them to act out violently.
The most recent script for Black Lagoon was written by Gary Ross who also wrote Seabiscuit. And from what it sounds like, Universal is going back to the drawing board with it -- which is a shame, because Ross is a very talented writer.
So Creature from the Black Lagoon is moving forward.
