Yes, the title say's it all. New Line Cinema has acquired a pitch for a movie from Darren Lemke that takes the classic tale of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King and turns it into an action-adventure film! I'm not kidding! This is real and New Line paid a good amount of money for it. Lemke is the guy that is currently writing Bryan Singers Jack and the Giant Killer.
The Nutcracker is the most popular Ballet EVER and has become a holiday classic, with music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, but the actual story was written by E.T.A. Hoffman decades prior to the ballet’s debut in 1892. The story has also been adapted into several animated projects. I'm sure there are a couple Barbie versions of it.
The story is about a 12-year old girl and her brother and sister who receive gifts from their clockmaker-inventor godfather on Christmas Eve, one of which was a Nutcracker doll. That night, the girl began an adventure that included a war involving a seven-headed Mouse King and his army of mice, curses and themes of ugliness and beauty.
So I can already see the trend that Hollywood is getting into. Turning to classic old school tales and turning them into crazy big-budget action-adventure films.
What are your thoughts on The Nutcracker being turned into an action adventure film?

I actually wrote a blog/article about this a long time ago (not the movie, but the general idea of how to make it better). Not to plug my website or anything, but if anyone's interested, here's what I said:

Back on track, I don't know how they could really pull this all off, mainly because if they stick to the roots of the ballet, they're never going to make it too action-adventuresque. I can see some women being easily attracted to the film, especially if they get some good-looking man to be the lead, but other than that, nothing else seems to stand out to me. We'll see in time.
