LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS Getting another Facelift

by Joey Paur

This is an interesting bit of movie news. 'Little Shop of Horrors' is once again getting remade and updated into some kind of new planty beast. Little Shop of horrors is a musical dark comedy created by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman in 1960 about a florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on blood.  In 1982 it was developed into a successful Broadway stage production, and then in 1986 it was turned into the classic film we all know today directed by Frank Oz, and had a fantastic cast of Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, Steve Martin and a classic performance by Bill Murray. I really enjoy that movie. If you haven't seen it you should check it out.

Since the story has already gone through so many different versions it's not a shock to me that someone would want to make another one. What I am surprised about is the guy that is going to direct it. His name is Declan O'Brien and he is best known for making those crazy bad low budget strait to DVD movies. He actually reveled he would be making this film during an interview for his new movie 'Wrong Turn 3', and here is what he has planned for the new version.

"Actually its been a busy time for me. I just optioned Roger Corman's 'The Little Shop of Horror', which Im setting up as a big studio remake. We're in the process of talking to studios this week. It will be a remake of Roger's original 1960's movie. I don't want to reveal too much, but it's me, it'll be dark. It wont be a musical."

I figured if they ever remade it again they would take the music out. I can really see the film being dark, hell they story is dark! The owner of the plant Seymore goes out and kills people to feed his plant for crying out loud! I doubt he will keep any of the comedy aspect in it as well. I would think this might just go strait to DVD, but also attached to the project is producer Andrew Tennenbaum who produced the 'Bourne Trilogy' so I am sure they are going to try and get a major studio to bite at the idea. I guess we'll have to wait and see. What are your thoughts?
