Because they had to! They were running out of 80's cartoons to turn into crappy movies. This project was actually first announced last year you can read up on the details Right Here. The movie will be a liv-action/CGI animated hybrid. So we will finally get to see what a Smurf would look like if it was really real. Who knows what they story line will be. The will probably base it in modern times and have some little kid involved somehow, maybe they will even throw in a few more female Smurfs this time around. The only human in the cartoon was Gargamel.

So this is your first look at 'The Smurfs' movie logo that will be presented by Columbia Pictures at the Licensing International Expo 2009 in Las Vegas next week. The movie is being written by David Stem and David Weiss, and is scheduled for a December 17, 2010 release.

Co-President of Columbia Pictures Doug Belgrad said in a previous interview:

“The Smurfs are one of the best-known franchises, and among the most beloved collection of characters in the world. We’re very excited to introduce a new generation to Papa Smurf, Smurfette and the other smurftastic Smurfs in all of their ‘three-apple-tall’ glory.”

I don't see it being any better than 'Garfield' or 'Alvin and the Chipmuncks', but they both made a ton of money anyway. So there you have folks! Are you excited for the new Smurfs movie?
