GHOSTBUSTERS 3 script is in and Ivan Reitman Confirms he will direct

Movie by Eli Reyes

Last month, after Ghotbusters writer and star Harold Ramis revealed that Ghostbusters 3 will hit theaters in 2011, the movie feels so close you can taste it! After 21 years a year sounds like nothing. Now news comes that after months and months of speculation, Ivan Reitman, director and producer of the first two films, will indeed be back to direct the third and long awaited third installment.

Last night in New York City on the red carpet for the National Board of Review, Reitman revealed some details on the general status of Ghost Busters 3.

When MTV asked if he would be returning to direct, Reitman answered with a simple and unequivocal, "Yes."

Reitman said that the script from Year One and The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky is in and that they are currently working on a second draft.

They have delivered a draft. We are working our way through another draft... good work is being done and all of us have our fingers crossed.

But Reitman shied away when asked to expand on the "good work," or if Sigourney Weaver's spoilerish speculation that Bill Murray's character Peter Venkman might appear in the movie as a slimer ghost, and that Oscar, her character's son from the second movie, would be a full-fledged Ghostbuster.

I'm not going to comment on what's in the script and on what Sigourney may or may not have said. She's been so busy on Avatar, I've not been able to find her. There's some very cool things in the new draft, let's just put it that way.

Saying nothing is probably all the conformation we need to know that Weaver knew what she was talking about. Letting that info spill out on the other hand...? So beware Weaver, Reitman is looking for you.

Confirming Ramis' plans for a 2011 release, Reitman also said that he hope's to "start shooting in this next year."

So there you have it. Tthe old gang is getting back together. That is of course to usher in a new gang of Ghostbusters for a new generation. I couldn't be happier that Reitman will be at the helm. It wouldn't be the same without him.

What do you think of Ivan Reitman coming back to direct GHOSTBUSTERS 3?
