2010-01-14T14:14:38-0800 Here's yet another thing to look forward to when Iron Man 2 hits theaters. IMAX Corporation, Marvel Entertainment and Paramount Pictures announced today that the Jon Favreau-directed film will get a simultaneous digital IMAX release along with the May 7th world wide release. So gather up some pocket cash and spring the few extra bucks to see Tony Stark and co. in all their digitally re-mastered glory. Thanks to IMAX DMR technology, the highly-anticipated sequel will be available the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience.
Iron Man 2 stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Jon Favreau, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Garry Shandling, John Slattery, Kate Mara, Clark Gregg and Olivia Munn.
You may remember back in september it was rumored that, much like Disney's Alice in Wonderland, they were experimenting with converting the entire film into 3D. That either fell through, cost too much, couldn't be done in time, or there was no truth to it to begin with. Either way, I'm glad we're getting just the 2D IMAX release. The live-action converted stuff just seems layered, and not deep. The Avatar crowds gave a much more enthused reaction to the Hubble 3D documentary trailer than the Alice trailer.

Here is the Press release:
"The success of the first 'Iron Man' movie catapulted the franchise from the comic books to theatre screens, and we're excited that the IMAX format will offer fans an even more immersive way to experience the sequel," said Tim Connors, Chief Operating Officer, Marvel Studios.
"'Iron Man 2' is a fantastic addition to our growing film slate for 2010, which is filling out faster than any previous year," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "The rollout of our digital projection system has enabled us to add more films to the slate, and we're very excited to partner with Marvel and Paramount on this next installment of the incredible 'Iron Man' franchise.""We're thrilled to once again be working with Paramount and our long time friends at Marvel Entertainment as we help to bring their characters to life in IMAX," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "The combination of Marvel's iconic 'Iron Man' story, Jon Favreau's brilliant vision and Paramount Pictures' talented team coupled with IMAX will make for a wild cinematic experience."
The IMAX release will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
