2009 Golden Globe Winners - AVATAR Takes home the Big Prize
The winners of the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards were awarded tonight at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. All the stars showed up dressed in their expensive attire in anticipation to see who would win what award. I've gotta say I was surprised by many of the winners, for others I wasn't surprised at all.
I watched a bit of the red carpet and caught Tobey Maguire telling the interviewer that he thinks he knows who is going to direct the Spider-Man reboot and said the choice was “an exciting idea”. Unfortunately there was no follow-up question so we are left to wonder.
Ricky Gervais did a fine job hosting the awards, and he was entertaining to watch. The best speech of the night came from Robert Downey Jr., and my favorite part is when Martin Scorsese was awarded the Cecil B. Demille Lifetime Achievement Award.
Here are the Golden Globe nominees with the winner in bold.
BEST DRAMA
Avatar
I seriously thought The Hurt Locker would take this one, so I was pretty surprised when Avatar took home the top prize. I'm happy it won it though.
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
Precious
Up in the Air
DIRECTOR
Katheryn Bigelow - The Hurt Locker
James Cameron - Avatar
I figured Cameron would take home the Best Director Award, the guy pulled off an incredible feat with Avatar.
Clint Eastwood - Invictus
Jason Reitman - Up in the Air
Quentin Tarantino - Inglourious Basterds
ACTOR (DRAMA)
Jeff Bridges - Crazy Heart
I haven't seen Crazy Heart yet so I don't really know how good Bridges was in it. I expected Clooney to win this one, but wanted to see Maguire take home the award because he was amazing in Brothers.
George Clooney - Up in the Air
Colin Firth - A Single Man
Morgan Freeman - Invictus
Tobey Maguire - Brothers
ACTRESS (DRAMA)
Emily Blunt - The Young Victoria
Sandra Bullock - The Blind Side
I thought for sure Sibide of Precious would have won this award. Sandra Bullock gave the best performance of her career in the Blind Side, but I thought Sibide was the best actress.
Helen Mirren - The Last Station
Carey Mulligan - An Education
Gabourey Sibide - Precious
BEST MUSICAL OR COMEDY
(500) Days of Summer
The Hangover
I would have loved to see (500) Days of Summer take home the award for this, but there is no denying the comedic genius of The Hangover.
It's Complicated
Julie & Julia
Nine
ACTOR (MUSICAL OR COMEDY)
Matt Damon - The Informant
Daniel Day Lewis - Nine
Robert Downey, Jr. - Sherlock Holmes
I was really surprised that Downey Jr. won this award. He was fun to watch in Sherlock Holmes, but both Matt Damon and Michael Stuhlbarg gave better performances in their roles. The people just love Downey Jr.
Joseph Gordon Levitt - 500 Days of Summer
Michael Stuhlbarg - A Serious Man
ACTRESS (MUSICAL OR COMEDY)
Sandra Bullock - The Proposal
Marion Cotillard - Nine
Julia Roberts - Duplicity
Meryl Streep - It's Complicated
Meryl Streep - Julie & Julia
I think it's ridiculous that Streep was nominated for two roles in this award category. Just pick one and give someone else a chance! Then I loved how she acted surprised when she won. Come on! She knew she was going to win!
FOREIGN-LANGUAGE FILM
A Prophet
Baarìa
Broken Embraces
The Maid
The White Ribbon
ANIMATED FILM
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

It's no surprise that UP won, but I was rooting for The Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Woody Harrelson - The Messenger
Christopher Plummer - The Last Station
Stanley Tucci - The Lovely Bones
Christoph Waltz - Inglourious Basterds
Hell yeah, he won!

The award is definitely deserved, she was great in that film.
Julianne Moore - A Single Man
SCREENPLAY
District 9
The Hurt Locker
It's Complicated
Up in the Air
I'm glad this movie one this. The movie was written incredibly well.
Inglourious Basterds
ORIGINAL SCORE
Michael Giacchino - Up
All I can say is thank goodness it wasn't Avatar. That original score was one or two notes away from being the exact same score as Titanic.
Marvin Hamlisch - The Informant
James Horner - Avatar
Abel Krozeniowski - A Single Man
Karen O. and Carter Burwell - Where the Wild Things Are
ORIGINAL SONG
"Cinema Italiano" - Nine
"I Want to Come Home" - Everybody's Fine
"I Will See You" - Avatar
"The Weary Kind" - Crazy Heart
Like I said I haven't seen Crazy Heart or heard this song, but I'm sure it was better than Avatars original song.
"Winter" - Brothers
CECIL B. DEMILLE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Martin Scorsese
You just can argue with this. He is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.
