DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS Coming From Sam Raimi and Mandate Pictures

Movie Sam Raimi by

Mandate Pictures has won and expensive bidding war for the rights to The Day of the Triffids.   Ghost House, is the partnership between Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Mandate Pictures.  Raimi has wanted to direct this picture for a long time since the original film was one of his favorites as a child.

Included in the acquisition package is the the original scifi novel by John Wyndham, which was the basis for the 1962 film.  According to the description of the novel a shower of meteorites causes 99% of the population to go blind and unleashes Triffids.

Triffids are aggressive and seemingly intelligent plants that are able to move about on their three "legs", appear to communicate with each other and possess a deadly whip-like poisonous sting that enables   them to kill and feed on the rotting carcasses of their victims.

There were earlier reports that this film would be done in 3D but that remains to be seen at the moment.  One of the cool things about the film is that Michael Preger was involved in the adaptation of another novel by Wyndham, Village of the Damned which was made into a film by John Carpenter.  Lets hope that he has a good grasp of the material and that Raimi can create a feeling of the apocalypse.

What are your thoughts on this news?  Who should star in the film?
