Do You Really Want Another STAR WARS Trilogy?

Yesterday, there was a quickly-squashed rumor from IESB that George Lucas is planning a new live action Star Wars trilogy of films set after the events of Return of the Jedi. Venkman already wrote this up, passing along word that Lucas apparently "got the itch" to return to the universe while working on the 3D conversions of all the live action films which will be rolled out (in sequential order) one per year from 2012 to 2017.

But my question is this: do you really want another Star Wars trilogy? Personally, I enjoyed Episode II: Attack of the Clones, but most people (including huge fans of the series) consider the prequels to be terrible. Let's take a look at George Lucas' filmography after the release of Episode IV in 1977 and count the feature length projects he's directed that DON'T have anything to do with Star Wars: oh wait, we can't. Because it's ZERO.

Sure, this guy created one of the most loved franchises of all time, but he's too close to the material. We've seen what happens when he passes the material off to another person (The Empire Strikes Back, arguably the best film in the entire series), and he's apparently doing fine work as a producer on the animated Clone Wars TV show. There's been talk of a live action TV show set in the Star Wars universe for years. In my opinion, Lucas is becoming like M. Night Shyamalan - he's lost his touch as a director and is better utilized in a behind-the-scenes capacity, either as a producer or someone who generates concepts for ideas that someone else then rewrites.

Back to the question at hand: do you really want another Star Wars trilogy? Does your excitement for seeing more characters in that universe really outweigh your trepidation that Lucas has the potential (nay, the probability) of further damaging the reputation of his once-great creation? I don't think it's worth it. Granted, this rumor of a new trilogy was denied by Lucasfilm almost instantly, but I wouldn't put it past Lucas to be ruminating about an idea like this.

I don't know - I'm not even the biggest fan of Star Wars. Sure, I dig the original trilogy, but they weren't ever my favorite films. I just wanted to get a conversation started. So let's hear from all sides: people who were raised on the trilogy, who came to it late, who love it, hate it, whatever - sound off in the comments. I'm legitimately interested to hear if you want another trilogy.
