George Clooney May Star In Soderbergh's THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E

We recently announced that Steven Soderbergh was going to be directing a big screen adaptation of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and now there is some additional news worthy of sharing.  It looks as if George Clooney is currently in talks to star in the film.

Soderbergh has a lot of great projects in the works this year aside from this just announced one.  He is working on releasing Haywire, his latest spy-based action thriller, next spring. Filming is currently going on for the virus thriller, Contagion planned for an October 21, 2011 release date starring Matt Damon, Kate Winslet and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Clooney and Soderbergh have a great relationship.  Clooney has starred in six of the director’s films including Solaris, The Good German and “Out Of Sight.  They also co-owned the now-defunct Section Eight which produced Syriana, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and Good Night, And Good Luck.

Despite, The Man From U.N.C.L.E being in it's early stages, WB chief Jeff Robinov has signed off on the original take of the film.  Soderbergh's material would have the film taking place in the 1960's instead of in modern times.

Soderbergh and team could decide to go back to square one, throw out all the existing scripts, and give Scott Z. Burns the chance to start over completely.  The Playlist is reporting that this is likely to be the last teaming of Clooney and Soderbergh, presumably because Soderbergh has been mulling an early retirement for a few months now.

The Playlist also reports that Soderbergh is still planning on filming Liberace this summer or early fall with Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.  Douglas' health is on the mend and his cancer treatments are over. The plan is to squeeze in The Man From U.N.C.L.E in as a late 2011 shoot, but 2012 may be a more realistic situation.

I think that Clooney and Soderbergh are perfect together.  All of their films have been enjoyable for me, so this is great news.  After looking at images of the original show, I feel that Clooney could really pull off the character well.  What are your thoughts?
