Here's the trailer for the The Greatest, the feature debut of writer-director Shana Feste.
The film has a great cast, starring Carey Mulligan (An Education) as a girl who loses her boyfriend -- Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) -- in a car accident. When she soon discovers she is pregnant with his baby, with nowhere else to go, she is taken in by his grieving family -- Susan Sarandon, Pierce Brosnan, Johnny Simmons (Jennifer's Body).
This is a great looking film that premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and is just getting distribution. Usually, a shelving of this sort doesn't bode well, but this could have been banking on hopes of Mulligan being an Oscar-winner.
As /Film points out, this is very reminiscent of Brad Siblering's 2002 self-inspired film Moonlight Mile, which also starred Sarandon as a bereaved parent. In the film, Jake Gyllenhall played the fiancee of Sarandon and Dustin Hoffman’s daughter, who had been killed.
This has that extra Juno-esque twist, but Moonlight Mile seems to have a bit more heart. Still, with the solif cast, and what looks to be another stellar performance by Mulligan, this looks hard to pass up.
The Greatest comes out in limited release this month.
The Greatest tells the story of Allen and Grace Brewer, a grief-stricken couple whose family has been pushed to the breaking point by the death of their older son, Bennett, in a car crash. When a young woman, Rose, shows up a few months later announcing that she is pregnant with Bennett’s child, the Brewer’s are forced to take her in. At first, Rose’s presence threatens to tear the family even further apart but, eventually, her interaction with each of the Brewers proves to be the very thing that brings them back together.
