Green Day's AMERICAN IDIOT To Be a Feature Film Musical?
Tom Hanks and his Playtone movie label are looking to take Green Day's hit album American Idiot, and turn it into a feature film musical. Talks are currently underway to bring this rock opera to life on the big screen. The album has already been turned into a Broadway Musical, which is set to begin on April 20th. Logically the next step is to turn it into a film. Hanks has a first look deal with Universal Pictures so that's where it will most likely be set up.
I've been a fan of Green Day since Jr. high, before they became the big popular punk rock band that they are now. This is a band I grew up with over the years, and it's been interesting to see them grow as a band and see their music change and evolve. Their album American Idiot was quite an accomplishment, it's a punk rock opera that tells a coming of age story about three small-town boys. One joins the armed forces, another moves to the city and takes up drugs, the third stays home and gets his girlfriend pregnant.
I think this is a great album, and I when I first listened to it I knew eventually it would be turned into a movie. It's got all of the elements of a good story, and has what it takes to make a solid feature film musical. This isn't the first time we've heard about this movie happening, last year Billy Joel Armstrong talked about pushing for the film, and it looks like it's gonna happen with Tom Hanks as a producer.
Playtone recently brought in $610 million dollars (worldwide boxoffice) from Mamma Mia! and there's no doubt they are looking to recreate that money making miracle, just through a totally different demographic. I'm sure the actors they get to star in the film will be much better than the ones (Evan Rachel Wood) in the music video below.
