Back in the year 2000 Brian Michael Bendis created the comic Ultimate Spider-Man which gave readers a series of stories of Peter Parker during his high school years. It’s been speculated that the new Spider-Man movie will use the Ultimate Spider-Man comics to lay the ground work for the story, but now Marvel and Disney will use the popular comic book as inspiration for a new animated TV series.
I think Ultimate Spider-Man would make a great animated series! The comic book already had that animation style feel to it, so it should translate well. The show will air on Disney XD starting in the Fall of 2011. Disney and Marvel are definitely looking to target a young male audience, the only thing about the project that may be discouraging to some hardcore comic fans is this statement from President of Marvel Animation Eric S. Rollman:
Ultimate Spider-Man will be a unique journey exploring our favorite web-slinger as he teams up with other fan favorite Marvel Super Heroes in never before seen stories with a new life filled with great challenges, new friends, intense action and character growth.
So it looks like we aren’t going to see any of the stories from the comics that Bendis has already written over the last nine years. He specifically states that the animated show will be “never before seen stories.” Now even though some of you may not like that, I’m sure there is a reason behind it, mostly legal reasons. There’s a lot of business and legal issues that go on behind closed doors that prevent these projects from doing everything that these guys would love to do. I’m sure Marvel Animation will bring in a team of good writers to bring the fans some cool Ultimate Spider-Man episodes, so I don't think there's anything to worry about.
There have been several Spider-Man animated series throughout the years some have been cool some have been awful, but none of them have really grabbed me, none of them took Spider-Man to it’s full potential as far as animated series go. But maybe this Ultimate Spider-Man will be it.
What do you think?
