Really?! According to Mickey Rourke, yes, it’s true. He is currently preparing to play Genghis Khan in a new movie from writer/director John Milius. He broke the news while doing an Iron Man 2 interview with the Orando Sentinel. It seems like such a crazy casting call. I think Rourke is a great actor, and makes for a fantistic villain, but Genghis Khan!? Really?! Here is what he had to say,
I’m playing Genghis. John wrote [the] piece [as] told from the son and grandson’s point of view, how they saw this mythic figure from their family. You see him in flashbacks, back when he was in his mid-40s. And back then, being in your mid-40s was being REALLY old.
He then went on to brag about his horse riding skills saying, “I probably ride a horse better than I drive a car," and then adds that he'll be prepared to shoot arrows on horseback. That's definitely a skill that many people don't have these days, but one day it may come in handy. Rourke also claims that the production will lens in parts of India and possibly China.
One of the things that Tourke likes about Khan is that he was a dog lover, and as you may or may not know, Rourke is also a dog lover. He explains that,
The Mongols used dogs in battle, and dogs rarely made it out of the battle. But in one instance, in this script, [Khan] orders his men – ‘Hold the dogs back.’ He was looking out for the dogs. I like that.
No word on if his pet chihuahua, Loki, will make an appearance in the film or not. Rourke seems is very excited to do the movie, and to work with such a great screenwriter.
I read his script and you know, the man is known for his tough writing. He wrote Conan and Dirty Harry and Apocalypse Now, and it’ll be interesting to see how he works behind the camera.
Milius has directed a couple films as well that I’m sure most of you have seen such as Conan and 1984’sclassic Red Dawn, which is currently being remade. This new Ganghis Khan film has some very interesting and unlikely talent on board to bring it to bring it to life. Rourke as Khan just throws me for a loop, it’s hard to imagine, but I guess they have a plan of making it work.
What do you think about rourke playing Genghis Khan?
