Movie Review: DEVIL - Better than Shyamalan's Last 4 Films
About 90% of people that I’ve talked to, and the reviews that I’ve read have told me that Devil was not worth my time or money. There is also the fact that M. Night Shyamalan wrote the story and produced the film, which is a turn off for a lot of people for the fact that the guy has made some really crappy films. But, I want to point out that he did not direct this film or write the screenplay.
I’m here to tell that Devil is a solidly decent film, and I can’t understand for the life of me why people aren’t enjoying this movie! It’s an entertaining film from start to finish. It had a decent script, solid acting and it’s a horror movie with a fun story that actually has a positive message.
Out of all the terrible horror films being released in Hollywood these days Devil is a breath of fresh hellish air. It’s also one of the few horror films these days that didn’t incorporate the gimmicky 3D Hollywood fad to make money. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the movie is going to make that much money anyway.
Devil isn’t the best movie of the year by any means, but it entertains! And, that’s one of the main reasons why we go to the movies, is to be entertained. This is a lower budget film with a simple story that revolves around five people stuck in an elevator with the Devil.
Drew and John Erick Dowdle did a fine job directing this film, and telling an effective story. I never got board. There was always a sense of thrill and anticipation while watching this movie. I actually feel bad for the directors of the film because Shyamalan’s bad name is taking all the heat for it, killing the desire for people to want to go out and see this movie. Had Shyamalan’s name not been attached to this film I think it would have been received by audiences and critics in a much more positive light. The movie starred Chris Messina, Bojana Novakovic, Bokeem Woodbine, Geoffrey Arend and Caroline Dhavernas. And there was really nothing not to like about their performances, they all did a sold job.
Devil isn’t really a scary horror film as much as it is a thriller, but it has a good mix of humor, drama, and horror that should make audiences happy. I honestly think you should give this movie a chance. You don’t have to see it on the big screen, you can wait for it on DVD or blu-ray if you want, but I think it's better than what people are being told or expecting. I went in to the film not expecting much and walked out completely satisfied.
The ending is sure to split the opinion of audiences, but regardless of how you look at it, it’s not the worst ending in the world. Personally I liked it.
After watching this film I can’t help but recommend you go check it out. I just don’t think people are giving it a fair chance due to Shyamalan’s involvement. I’m not a fan of Shyamalan’s work either! But, if you do want to compare it to Shyamalan’s other work, I thought Devil was better than his last four films.
So there ya have it. That’s what I thought, and I’m sure I’m going to get a lot of crap from people that thought the movie sucked. But that’s ok. We’re all entitled to our own opinions, and that’s what makes this world such a wonderful place.
If you saw Devil tell us what you thought!?
