M. Night Shyamalan to make UNBREAKABLE 2 as a Night Chronicles Film
I don't know about you, but I thought M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable was a solid movie. I've always wanted to see a sequel to Unbreakable get made. There's been a lot of talk about it over the years, but nothing has ever happened with it... until now
Apparently Shyamalan had an idea for Unbreakable 2 that he's pretty excited about, and it looks like it's going to actually get made into a film. The only thing is, he's going to take the idea and develop it as his next Night Chronicles film. As you know these Night Chronicle films are idea's the Shyamalan comes up with but has other writers and directors come in to develop it. The upcoming film Devil is the first Night Chronicle movie.
Shyamalan did an interview with MTV recently where he explains the whole thing.
I cannibalized the idea for the sequel to 'Unbreakable' for one of the 'Night Chronicles,'" revealed Shyamalan.
It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for 'Unbreakable,' and it was too much," he said of his reasons for excising the element that was intended to become "Unbreakable 2." "There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, 'I'll make this the second flick.'
However, as the filmmaker got caught up in other projects and "Unbreakable 2" became less likely, the seed of that idea still managed to grow.
I fleshed it out more and more, and thought, 'This could be a standalone movie,'" he said. "I'll just say it: the third 'Night Chronicles' movie is what would have been the sequel [to 'Unbreakable']. So now I need to come up with a new idea.
I'm not a big fan of what M. Night has been doing in his films lately, so if he passes this story off to another writer and director, then maybe the movie has a better chance of being good. I doubt Shyamalan will ever get around to making an actual Unbreakable 2, so I guess this will be the closest thing we see to a sequel.
