Natalie Portman was recently interviewed by Entertainment Weekly and she revealed the director or direcotrs of the adaptation of David Mitchell’s heralded 2004 novel Cloud Atlas.
Here is what Portman had to say abou the film:
“I don’t know what’s going on with financing. I read it while doing [The Wachowski produced] ‘V for Vendetta’ and I gave it to the Wachowskis and to Tom Tykwer (he shot a “Paris Je Taime” short with her around the same time). Now they’re directing it together, the three of them. I will have some acting role in it if it happens, but probably nothing major.”
The film was initially reported as being directed by Tom Twyker with The Wachowskis producing. This new comment is in line with what Halle Berry's earlier statment when she was attached to star, that The Wachowskis were going to direct the film. That comment by Berry has not been confirmed and there is still no start date for the film.
Cloud Atlas follows six main characters over the course of thousands of years and several genres and sounds as if it would be almost impossible to film. A number of actors have been loosely attached to various parts since it's first announcement and they include the self-confirmed Portman, Berry, Tom Hanks (Berry “confirmed” him) and then Ian McKellen and James McAvoy. Right now it is not official that any of them will participate in the film if it ever gets off the ground.
The Wachowskis may be planning to create a mainstream payday to allow them to work on a passion project like Cloud Atlas. It was recently announced that they were working on a modern day Robin Hood film that could potentially star Will Smith.
That projec definitely is more commercially viable than Cloud Atlas and their other film Cobalt Neutral 9 which is an homosexual love story set in the middle of the Iraq war which features American soldier falling in love with a Jihadi.
