Steven Soderbergh's Liberace biopic picked up by HBO - Filming in 2012

Steven Soderbergh is finally going to be able to make his Liberace biopic thanks to HBO. The project was initially scheduled to beigin earlier this year with Michael Douglas playing Liberace and Matt Damon starring as his lover Scott Thorson. Douglas' cancer affliction cause the project to be put on hold. The film is titled Behind the Candelabra and it's tentatively planned for summer 2012, according to /Film.

Here is what Soderbergh had to say about the film to the LA Times:

From the inception of this project, we’ve had two priorities: getting it right creatively, and getting as many people as possible to see it. HBO’s fearless approach to original programming and their unparalleled ability to pull in viewers make them the perfect fit for us.  Apart from my hair growing back, I couldn’t be happier.

The script was penned by Richard LaGravenese (The Bridges of Madison County) adapted from Thorson’s own memoir Behind the Candelabra (My Life With Liberace).

Here is what Len Amaton, HBO Films president had to say:

This is a story that’s going to surprise a lot of people… It’s funny, heartbreaking and always fascinating, and we are delighted that Jerry and Steven brought the film to HBO.
