Possible Story Idea for THE DEPARTED 2

The Departed screenwriter William Monahan recently did an interview in which he talks about his idea for a sequel to Martin Scorsese's film which is a film project he's been rumored to be working on. We've been hearing talk of a sequel to The Departed for some time now, but until today we haven't really heard anything for it. Here's his idea,

My idea actually is to set the film before, during and after the action of the first film, which I think would be extraordinary… Essentially, in the middle section of the thing I’ve intended, you’d see actions that take place during the original Departed, but aren’t on screen in the original Departed. There would be off-screen things that occur at that point in the story. But it would work seamlessly as a movie of its own.

Whoa, I love that concept. That would make for such a great film. I'm not sure if anything ever been done like that before. And its a great solution to bringing the full cast back, most of which was killed off in the first film. Of course there is always the possibility that this movie will never happen. When asked if he thinks this movie would ever happen he said,

No. I think Warner Bros. would have liked to see a synopsis of it. I don’t do synopses and I don’t pitch. Personally, I don’t know if it’s ever going to happen. I know the film, I’ve got the film in my head. Even if everybody didn’t come back, which they could in the film as I’ve configured it, it would be a hell of a paycheck for somebody to write. The film would have to be absolutely superb.

Well, hopefully someone at Warner Bros. reads his idea and gets the film into production, because it could be another great film. What do you think?
