AUSTIN POWERS Musical In Development

Austin Powers is getting a stage production, and that sounds Shagadelic Baby!  THR reports that Casey Nicholaw, who co-directed The Book of Mormon and the Elf stage version, is in talks to direct the Austin Powers musical that Mike Myers and Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures are currently developing. The musical will feature the music of Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello.

Unfortunately Meyers will not be starring in the production. However, he will be writing the story that is planned as a prequel to the movies. It will reportedly be set in 1960s London and detail how Powers first acquired his mighty mojo.

This stage production makes sense because there were musical numbers in the New Line movies. The movies have been considered as musicals by Meyers. A fourth movie is currently in the works, but Meyers has yet to reach the writing stage.

This sounds like a show I would like to see on stage. I have heard a lot of good things about Nicholaw’s past work on The Book of Mormon and Spamalot. What are your thoughts on this news?
