TOP GUN 2 - Tom Cruise gives a Brief Update

Movie Tony Scott by Joey Paur

We've been hearing a bout a Top Gun sequel for some time now. Usual Suspects screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie was actually hired to write the script for the film, and Tony Scott was on board to direct it. But then things kind of simmered down, and I wondered if it would ever actually happen. For those of you wondering the same thing... Tom Cruise has given an update basically saying that McQuarrie is out, but they're working on it. Here are a few quotes from his interview with MTV,

I don't think Chris [McQuarrie] is going to write it. Chris is directing One Shot right now, which I'm acting. We've got to go back in January and finish it.

With McQuarrie gone, they will need to find a new screenwriter. As of right now Cruise, Scott and Jerry Bruckheimer are the only production team this movie has right now.

I said to Tony I want to make another movie with him. He and I haven't made a film since Days of Thunder. Tony and I and Jerry, we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now. I thought, 'Wow, that would be ... what we could do now.' "

Cruise wants two things from this movie... a worthy script, and the freedom to make the movie as they did in 1986.

I hope we can figure this out to go do it again. If we can find a story that we all want to do, we all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot 'Top Gun.'

I can get behind that. I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel if it actually turned out to be an awesome movie. I'm a big fan of fighter jets, so I see a lot of potential. What are your thoughts on a Top Gun sequel? Is this a film you want to see happen?
