Robert Downey Jr. close to signing on for Paul Thomas Anderson's INHERENT VICE to film this fall

Robert Downey Jr. is getting close to a deal to star in Inherent Vice for Paul Thomas Anderson. The actor has some time in his busy schedule after he finishes The Avengers, since he's no longer part of Disney’s Oz, The Great and Powerful.

In December we reported that RDJ was at the top of Anderson’s list to star. Now Downey is interested and his involvement is much more likely. The film is based on the Thomas Pynchon book of the same name, The Hollywood Reporter describes the film as ”a comparatively accessible Pynchon work that tells the story of a stoner detective who gets wrapped up in a number of mysteries in 1969 L.A. while the Manson Family trial growls in the background.”

Downey has a slew of movies on his slate in the next two years, including high profile projects like Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (December 2011), Iron Man 3 (summer 2013), and The Avengers (summer 2012). He's still not confirmed for this role, he is seriously considering it, so expect an official announcement soon.

As I said when we first reported on this, I think this is a perfect role for RDJ. What are your thoughts on this news?
