G.I. JOE 2 will Stand Apart from the First Film, but not really

Movie G.I. Joe by Joey Paur

As we wait to hear who the new director for G.I. Joe will be, we have a little update on the story for you, that really does nothing to get us excited about anything. As of right now there are two directors in the running, F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job) and Jon Chu (Step Up 3D).

Here's what Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner had to say about what is going on with the G.I. Joe sequel,

It's in the works! We have a really good script and we're right now talking to a number of directors.

It's good to know Stephen Sommers is no longer attached to the project, but at this point it doesn't really matter because the film franchise has already been ruined. He goes on to talk a little bit about the the script to the sequel that was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick and how it stands alone while for some reason it also tips its hat to Rise of Cobra.

There is a really great idea in the second G.I. Joe. In many ways, it'll be great for the people who saw the first one, but you don't need to have studied every element of the first one to enjoy the second. We've made sure that that's the case.

There's nothing to study about the first film! In fact if you haven't seen I beg you not to. It's a joke to the G.I. Joe franchise. What the studio needs to do is just reboot the whole damn thing and start from scratch, and make a G.I. Joe movie that's actually good. Apparently the sequel starts out where the last one ends... Zartan is president of the United States.

Obviously, we know coming out of the first film that the president is an impostor. You might begin with the knowledge of having your president as an impostor. What would that mean? From that, you can tell a very big story without only having to rely on the chronology of the first film.

It's safe to say I have no desire to see this film, and I don't even think the writers of Zombieland will be able to save the film from what Sommers already started. It's doomed.
