Remember last month when Superman renounced his U.S. citizenship in the 900th issue of Action Comics saying,
I am renouncing my US citizenship... I'm tired of having my actions construed as instruments of US policy. 'Truth, Justice and the American Way' -- it's not enough anymore. The world's too small. Too connected.
There was a lot of discussion over this, some people were cool with it, others were flipping out. I think it all came down to the fact Superman was from another planet anyway so what's the big deal?
Superman has sure changed his tone and view of America in the last month. Today we see a very different side and attitude from Superman. On the last page of Superman #711 Superman gives a very inspirational speech to Jimmy Olsen, on how much he loves America and why. Here's what the Man of Steel had to say this time...
That’s what America is about, really. That’s the American way. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness – and second chances. None of us are forced to be anything we don’t want to be. When I was young I knew that I would be someone different when I grew up. I would leave home and make a new life for myself. A new start, a second chance. When I first went to Metropolis, it was full of people who’d done the same thing. People from all over America – from over the world - who went to the city to live the lives they wanted – to be the people they wanted to be. That’s the idea that America was founded on, but it’s not just for the people born here, it’s for everyone. And it’s for people like me and Livewire too.
What do you all think about Superman's change of heart? Do you prefer his bitter attitude toward America, or his inspiring positivity?
