G.I. JOE 2 will not be in 3D, filming begins in August in New Orleans

Movie G.I. Joe: Retaliation by

We have an update on G.I. Joe 2 for you on this fine Friday. Earlier we reported that John Chu was set to direct the sequel and that Lee Byung-hun (Storm Shadow), Ray Park (Snake Eyes) and Channing Tatum (Duke) were the only ones reprising their roles from the Stephen Sommers directed fiasco. With a scheduled release date of August 10th 2012, it only makes sense that the film would begin filming relatively soon. According to Collider, Chu will shoot the film in New Orleans this August and in 2D instead of 3D.

In earlier statments, Chu shared his feelings on shooting the film in 3D.

“I really want to do it in 3D, but the decision hasn’t been made yet. A lot of factors that go into that, which I think it’s good to have a big discussion about. I think it’s going to be perfect for it, but there are other factors that are built into it—how it slows you down, things like that. But I could try some other things if it wasn’t in 3D; it would change my whole view of how I would make this movie, so we’re trying to figure it out.”

For some reason it looks as though 3D will not be an option for this film, and I for one am just fine with that. I love 3D when it is done right. Lately, there have been so many films that are not able to properly use the technology. I am a fan of 3D, but not when it's been post converted.

I may be the only one of the GeekTyrant team that does not despise the first film. I had not built up my expectations and only saw it on DVD after it was released. There were tons of flaws, but I had a lot of fun watching it at home. G.I. Joe 2 just seems to be in the right hands with Chu, so I hope the film really does everything to win disgruntled fans over and get new audiences in the seats.

What are your thoughts on this news? Are you happy it will not be in 3D?
