Ridley Scott to produce Pirate Heist series for FOX called PYRATES

While Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is blowing up in theaters a new Pirate TV series deal is currently being put together over at Fox. The new pirate drama is called Pyrates, and it sounds like it’s going to be a awesome.

Pyrates is set in the 17th century, and was created by Barry Schindel (Law & Order, Numbers). Stephen Hopkins (24) is attached to direct the first episode of the series. Ensemble Entertainment is producing in association with Ridley and Tony Scott's Scott Free Productions.

According to Deadline the film is “based on historical event’s, Pyrates is described as a gritty portrayal of the men and women who pulled off the largest heist on pirate history - the capture of the Spanish silver fleet in 1628 - sparking the golden age of piracy, a time when there was greater honor amongst thieves than those who hunted them.”

So it’s like a pirate version of Oceans 11... awesome! I absolutely love the idea of an epic pirate heist story. This could really be an incredible show. The series will be a 10-13 episode event-type limited series that will air in the summer of 2012.

This isn’t the only Pirates series being developed, FX and Fox International have teamed up with producers Graham King and Gale Anne Hurd to develop a series called Port Royal. It looks like Pirates could become quite popualr here again soon, if that's the case, lets make some more Master and Commander Far Side of the World films.

What do you all think about the idea being this new series?
