Sony's Kaz Hirai Blames Anonymous for All PSN Trouble

In a letter addressed to the US Congress, Sony’s Kaz Hirai alleges that hacker group Anonymous might be responsible for the PlayStation Network debacle after all.

In case you haven’t been following the story, here’s a quick summary: Sony’s treatment of PlayStation 3 hacker George “Geohot” Hotz provoked the wrath of Anonymous. Shortly after the group made their first threat against Sony, the PlayStation Network suffered a major attack and theft of various types of users' personal information, possibly including financial data. Anonymous, normally quick to take credit for their actions, denied that they actually performed the attack.

Hirai’s letter, according to Gamasutra, mentions that a scouring of their servers revealed a file named “Anonymous” with the group’s slogan “we are legion” inside of it. In addition to that, they said the data theft occurred shortly after Anonymous launched a denial of service attack against the network. Those two bits of evidence seem to be the centerpiece of Sony’s claim.

A friend and fellow PSN user mentioned that an outside party has attempted to use his card in the wake of this. Immediately after finding that out, I canceled mine. My card company was well-aware of the problem and made the process pretty painless, so, if you feel compelled to switch your card, know that it won’t be too awful.
