Guillermo del Toro says he "would love to" direct MALEFICENT

Guillermo del Toro recently revealed that he "would love to direct" Disney's Maleficent. There have been a number of directors being considered for the gig since Tim Burton dropped out of the live-action take on the story set to star Angelina JolieDavid Yates (Harry Potter films), Darren Aronofsky, and most recently David O. Russell (The Fighter) was reportedly circling the job.

Here is what Del Toro had to say to the LA Times:

“Let me put it this way, if they ask I’ll take the meeting. I think Maleficent’s dragon is the only design with the wings separate from the front legs, the only time that design has ever worked. And let me tell you how much of a fan I am. I have a collection of over two or three dozen Maleficent figures, some of them four or five feet tall. I own about 10 pieces of conceptual art from ‘Sleeping Beauty’ that include the dragon and a lot more pieces that are just from ‘Sleeping Beauty.’ It’s one of my three favorite Disney films. I would love to. But I don’t want to put too many hopes on it. They’re probably on a fast track and I cannot take any more projects on a fast track. “

I would have loved to have seen his vision of The Hobbit (which also deals with dragons), but this would be awesome as well. Del Toro is currently working on Pacific Rim. Filming is set to start later this year for a summer 2013 release. He also co-wrote and produced Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, which arrives in theaters Aug. 26.

Maleficent would be perfect for del Toro, who is perfect with visually dark universes. I am hopeful that Disney will give him that call to set up a meeting., What are your thoughts on this possibility?
