Seth Gordon hired to direct WAR GAMES reboot for MGM

Seth Gordon has been tapped to develop a War Games reboot of the 1983 thriller to direct for MGM. Gordon knows a thing or two about video game related films, he broke onto the Hollywood scene with his documentary The King of Kong, and recently directed the highly anticipated comedy Horrible Bosses, with Colin Farrell, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Jamie Foxx.

MGM is also planning reboots of Robocop and has Jose Padilha set to direct, and also had a Carrie remake being scripted by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. John Badham directed the original film, which is a personal favorite of mine. It starred Matthew Broderick as a computer hacker who finds a back door into a military computer program. Ally Sheedy plays his love interest, the two think they are playing games, but in truth those games are war maneuvers that could trigger WWIII if the computer launches nuclear missiles at the Russians.

The reboot may not sit well with all fans, but when you think about how far technology has come since 1983 I am excited about the possibilities. I love the parts of the original that took us into arcade culture, so it will be interesting to see how Gordon translates this aspect to todays multi-player online games. What are your thoughts on this news? Who would you like to see star in the film?
