As we've reported Justin Lin is helming a fifth installment of the Terminator franchise with financing from Megan Ellison's Annapurna Productions. The film was originally set to have Arnold Schwarzenegger starring in a major role, but his recent personal issues have caused him to put all of his acting on hold. You would think that would cause production to stall, but Ellison and Lin are planning on forging ahead and now Empire reports that Paul Walker may be along for the ride.
Lin and Walker have a good working relationship, so this news is not a surprise. At this point it's not known if he will play Kyle Reese or a new character. Lin has planned what is being referred to as reboot similar to what was done with J.J. Abrams' Star Trek. Ther story will have 'a torn timeline setting up a narrative thread to veer off from the established franchise without necessarily contradicting what's gone before."
Empire also reports that Schwarzenegger's screen time may unfortunately be reduced and could be considered more of a cameo. The producers are hoping that this lower commitment will cause Arnold to agree to star. As a fan of the franchise, I would rather see him a little than not at all. I am very excited to see another Terminator film on the big screen and have been very happy with what Lin has done with the Fast and Furious franchise so far. Walker is great in action roles and I can see him in the Terminator universe. None of this information has been confirmed yet, so we will count this as a rumor.
