SDCC 2011: TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY Panel

You missed a hella good time at the Torchwood panel today. John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Mekhi Phifer, Alexa Havins, Bill Pullman, and Jane Espenson were all here at the Con to talk about their new (and newly American-based) series, Torchwood: Miracle Day. John Barrowman said that the ending of Children of Earth was written to sort of close out the show, but he thought there was more story to tell. Eventually Russell Davies and Jane Espenson  started working on new ideas for a new series, Starz was very supportive, and now here we are.

There was a sad lack of exclusive footage and scenes from future episodes, but they did let a few tantalizing tidbits drop. For longtime fans of the show, if you thought that it couldn't get any darker than 4, 5, 6, just wait until episode 5. Episode 5 is a very important and emotional episode for Jack and Gwen. Captain Jack won't move on from Ianto immediately, but will have sexytimes in Episode 7. There is some kind of major sequence in episode 10. Phifer's character, Rex, may be an arrogant jerk, but there's an upcoming episode, that will flip the audience's perception of him. And Espenson says that in this series we should look forward to flexibility with the timeline, darkness, complications, and losses. And we should ask ourselves the questions the show is asking? What would all of this mean? How would we change as a species? What would happen if…? And Barrowman says to look forward to brilliant writing by Espenson.

Mostly the panel was just really funny. Eve Myles has amazing comedic timing, and John Barrowman is a bit camp, which is deliciously fun. The cast seems to really enjoy each other, which is kind of rare. There was an Annie sing-along, and I will leave you with the slightly cryptic quote, "I DID NOT PEE MYSELF."
