GAME OF THRONES Casting - Gwendoline Christie to play Brienne Tarth

Gwendoline Christie has been cast in the role of Brienne Tarth, Maid of Tarth, in the upcoming second season of Game of Thrones. Brienne is a swordswoman of Renly Baratheon. She is described "as a large and piggish-looking woman with an awkward personality who’s mocked as 'Brienne the Beauty.'Brienne is as tough and skilled with a sword as most men and longs for knighthood despite her gender."

Christie is not a very well known actress actress, but appeared in Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. This seems like perfect casting for this character, I can imagine what the transformation will look like. She is 6'3" and here's was George R.R. Martin had to say about her on his blog

This was another one of those cases where there was hardly any debate. The day the first batch of auditions went up for the role, we looked at a dozen actresses who were reading for Brienne and one actress who WAS Brienne. Gwendoline gave a great reading, and her look was just perfect. No, when she auditioned, she did not look she does in the photo above. She came in looking... well, like Brienne.

She joins Natalie Dormer (Tudors), who will be playing Margaery Tyrell, daughter of a House Tyrell.

What are your thoughts on the casting of Brienne?
