THE MUNSTERS could live again at NBC

TV Bryan Fuller by

The classic television show, The Munsters is getting a reboot and it could actually turn out amazing.

Bryan Fuller first developed his remake of The Munsters last year, but it was passed over for other pilots at the time. This isn’t going to be The Munsters just as they were in their original run in the 1960s. They’re getting a darker, gritty re-imagining like most remakes nowadays. Fuller plans to dive deeper into the origins of the how the Munster family came to be. Maybe we’ll finally get a real answer on just where Marilyn came from!

All the original characters will be included: Herman Munster, the Frankenstein-like dad; wife Lily Munster; the off-his-rocker Grandpa; wolfboy son Eddie Munster; and the beautiful and sweet Marilyn Munster. They’ve even included Eddie’s pet dragon Spot.

The Munsters are a television classic with a storied history of remakes and sequels already. Universal Studios produced the original The Munsters, which ran for 70 episodes on CBS from 1964 to 1966. After the show ended, there came a feature film in 1966 called MUNSTER, GO HOME! and a NBC made-for-TV movie THE MUNSTERS’ REVENGE. Then a completely new cast came in for the 1980s syndicated revival The Munsters Today, and then the cast was replaced again for the 1995 Fox made-for-TV movie HERE COMES THE MUNSTERS and its sequel MUNSTERS’ SCARY LITTLE CHRISTMAS.

While this comes on the tails of the news that Bewitched, Lincoln Lawyer, and a slew of other television remake deals are in the works this development season, this is the project that I feel has the best chance of actually being quality television.

Bryan Fuller has a solid track record in TV, having created Pushing Daises and having a major role with other genre favorites like Dead Like Me, Heroes, and the too-soon-cancelled Wonderfalls. His previous work proves he knows how to deal with quirky humor along with more serious sci-fi/fantasy elements, which gives me a lot of hope for this new telling of the Munsters.
