Zack Snyder directing THE LAST PHOTOGRAPH after Niels Arden Oplev drops out

Zack Snyder has stepped up to direct The Last Photograph after Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) dropped out, according to Twitch. The drama stars Sean Penn and Christian Bale and will be Snyders next project once Man of Steel has wrapped. At this time it is not known why Oplev dropped out.

Photograph tells the story of "two men who are inspired to travel to war torn Afghanistan by a photograph." Here is an earlier description we posted:

Set in Afghanistan, it is a timely drama that has elements of The Searchers and Taken. Bale plays a war correspondent who witnesses and is the only survivor of an attack on a group of Americans. Penn is circling the role of a retired ex-special ops soldier who comes to the scene determined to free a family member who has been kidnapped. The journalist agrees to help identify the kidnappers and travel the rough terrain to find them, in exchange for the story. The road brings them in confrontation with tribal regions of Afghanistan, and none of the diplomats will help.

This is a major departure for Snyder, who is known for creating highly visual fan films. His involvement makes sense because he and his wife have been producers on the project for awhile. I am interested to see his take on dramatic piece and it will be cool to see him working with these stars. What are your thoughts on this news?
