Firefox Joy...stick that is

Irene Ros & Rick Waldron posted an article on the Bocoup Weblog today detailing some awesome new features added to the Nightly Build of Firefox 8, those being DOM Events for Joysticks.

This may not seem too exciting for the non-web developer, but it could open up a whole new avenue of gaming.

Most console game development is only possible for larger companies that can afford to buy into the proprietary SDK's. This would allow smaller startups and individuals to build console like games without needing absurd amounts of money to purchase a Dev Kit.

With the progress WebGL and Canvas are making one could expect to see Multi-player games in the browser within a few short months and as GPU Acceleration continues to be improved for WebGL and canvas you could have some pretty amazing games in browser.

It wouldnt be surprising if these events are implemented in Chromiums Nightly's within the next couple weeks as well.

You can download one of the Special Builds at Firefox 8 Nightly (Special builds), and check out the original article at Bocoup here.
