Disney Bringing Back CONDORMAN?
These days a lot of studios are reaching back into their library of older properties, dusting them off and attempting to bring them to the big screen. Disney is looking at pulling out their 1981 superhero action comedy Condorman and bringing it back to life for the big screen.
The story for the film was inspired by Robert Sheckley's The Game of X, and Condorman follows comic book illustrator Woodrow "Woody" Wilkins who transforms himself into the superhero he draws. He's asked by the CIA to assist in an operation in Istanbul, "upon arriving in Istanbul, he meets a beautiful Russian named Natalia Rambova, who poses as the Russian civilian with whom the exchange is supposed to take place, but it is later revealed that she is in fact a KGB spy. Woody does not tell Natalia his real name, and instead fabricates his identity to her as a top American agent code-named 'Condorman'. During the encounter, Woody fends off a group of would-be assassins and saves her life by sheer luck before accomplishing the paper trade. Impressed by Woody, and disgusted by how she was treated by her lover/boss Krokov (Oliver Reed) when she returns to Moscow, Natalia decides to defect and asks the CIA to have 'Condorman' be the agent that helps her."
According to a Disney insider at Moviehole, "The idea remains the same," but this time around it will most likely be an animated feature. The insider went on to say,
Wally. A Brit again. Robert Pattinson’s name has been floated, can you see him going for it? He seems to be into more intellectual things? Still a pompous cartoonist turned superhero type gets to assist in the deflection of a sexy young KGB agent. Emphasis would be more on action this time around though. They want to steer as far off from Johnny English territory as possible. But there’s talk of doing lots with the Condorman brand. Guessing you’ll hear more about it soon Clint.
As of right now, one of Condorman's big supporters is Stephen Wackler, who was an editor on The Amazing Spider-Man. Here's where things get a little silly, the site reports Wackler, "and quite a few others, believe that with Disney now doing Marvel’s movies, they should consider making the character part of the Marvel Universe. Either way, it would all begin with a solo movie – the obligatory origins movie."
Yeah, I don't see that happening. It actually sounds like this whole new Condorman movie is a long shot. I honestly don't even remember the movie, but it didn't do very well at the box office the first time around.
Do you think Disney should bring Condorman back to the big screen?
