Director Matthew Vaughn is officially back to direct the sequel to X-Men: First Class. He previously mentioned that he would like to see the sequel take place in the latter part of the 1960's "where you’ve got The Stones, The Beatles, Flower Power…” Today we have a bit more info on the sequel and the character it will focus on... Magneto.
It's not really all that surprising--after all, he was basically the main character and focus of the first film. Screenwriter Simon Kinberg recently did an interview with MTV and talked about exploring Magneto's origin even further.
That's what was so cool about the first one and what we want to continue. Magneto becomes the villain ultimately of the franchise but he's a much more complicated character as a young man. He's someone you sympathize with, you care about you root for even though might not necessarily agree with his methods, you understand his philosophy.
As for whether or not Magneto will be a full-on villain in the sequel or still trying to find his place in the world Kinberg says,
We’re still figuring that out. I think the truth is ultimately that because Michael [Fassbender] is such an interesting actor, he’ll never be full-on anything. He’ll have a villainous side and he’ll have a sympathetic human side you’ll be able to relate but you’ll also be afraid of him. He becomes Magneto, he says 'Call me Magneto' at the end of the first movie.
Kinberg mentions that he doesn't know what the title of the film will be yet, but goes on to talk about how big of a fan he is of the franchise.
I’m a huge X-Men fan. I grew up loving the comic books and it was really exciting to be able to do the origin story of Xavier and Magneto, and getting those two actors, [James] McAvoy and [Michael] Fassbender, were really amazing. So being able to explore those characters with actors of that quality will be exciting a second time around, and doing some things unexpected with those characters, which is the plan.
I loved X-Men: First Class, and I think most of us fanboys and fangirls are excited to see what happens in this upcoming sequel. Watch the interview below and tell us what you think. What would you like to see happen in the sequel?
