New GREEN ARROW TV Series To Have Jason Bourne Type Qualities

Movie Green Arrow by Joey Paur

As we reported earlier, the CW is bringing the Green Arrow back to the small screen in a new series called Arrow, which they hope will replace the void left by Smallville. Last week, it was announced that Stephen Amell was cast in the lead role. I love the idea of Green Arrow getting his own TV series, and I hope they are able to successfully pull it off.

Warner Bros. TV is producing the project that is described as "a modern retelling of the story of DC Comics character Green Arrow." Amell will play "the vigilante superhero who fights crime using archery, martial arts and technology under his secret identity as Oliver Queen, a wealthy playboy and billionaire industrialist-turned-outspoken politician in Star City."

We have a little more detail on what we can expect to see from the series and according to CW head Thom Sherman, it will be less 'comic book-y' and more grounded in reality like Jason Bourne.

It’s a very provocative and sophisticated and edgy. It’s not as comic book-y as Smallville or other [superhero projects] from other networks.

He doesn’t have any superpowers, he’s a very grounded character like a Jason Bourne — we use the term ‘mambo'. His skill-set is that he’s an archer, but he also has physical strength and prowess. He’s clever and able to devise ways of taking down a bad guy that are unique and fun to watch.

I can't really argue with that statement, because it makes perfect sense for the character. So far, I like what I'm hearing about the direction they are planning on taking the series and this character. It makes me wonder though, if he will actually be putting on a superhero costume. I guess we'll eventually find out.

The Green Lantern co-writers Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim came up with the idea for the show and wrote the story. They will produce the series alongside Fringe and Vampire Diaries writer Andrew Kreisberg, whom they brought in to write the script. Kreisberg also wrote DC Comics’ Green Arrow and Black Canary. David Nutter will direct the pilot.

What are your thoughts on the series?
