THE SIMPSONS Creator Matt Groening Reveals where Springfield got its Name

TV The Simpsons by Joey Paur

After all of these years of wonder where Springfield exists in The Simpsons universe, its creator Matt Groening has finally revealed where the little town of Springfield got its name from. Here's what he had to say in an interview with Smithsonian Mag...

Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon. The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show “Father Knows Best” took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown. When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, “This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.” And they do.

And there you have it! The city of Springfield has been explained, and it makes perfect sense. I think we all assumed it was basically supposed to be Springfield USA, it's good to have confirmation on that, but it came after the fact. The original Simpsons Springfield is in Oregon. What do you think of that?
