Justin Lin To Direct and Produce CHINGLISH

Movie Justin Lin by

Justin Lin is changing directions for his next project. THR reports that the Fast and Furious director has acquired movie rights to David Henry Hwang‘s stage play Chinglish. Hwang will pen the screenplay for the adaptation, which is about an American businessman in China. Lin will produce the movie under his Barnstorm Pictures, which has a first-look deal at Universal.

The play debuted at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre in 2011, and then headed to Broadway soon after. An international tour will kick-off at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre this fall.

Here is what Lin had to say about the project:
As soon as I saw Chinglish on Broadway, I began to envision this smart and insightful cross-cultural comedy as a film. I'm excited about working with David to bring this very timely story to the screen.
Hwang added:
I've loved Justin's work ever since he burst on the scene with Better Luck Tomorrow, and it feels very right to be collaborating with him on the movie version of my play.
I am looking forward to seeing a comedy directed by Lin. Fast & Furious 6 arrives in theaters on May 2013. Do you think that Lin will be able to pull off a comedic film?
