DRIVE Director Nicolas Refn Developing BARBARELLA TV Series

TV by Joey Paur

Drive director Nicolas Refn is teaming up with Gaumont International Television to bring us a TV series based on the 1960's comic and sci-fi film Barbarella, which starred Jane Fonda. This is the same production company bringing us the new Hannibal series currently in production.

Barbarella was created by Jean-Claude Forest, and the title character is assigned by the President of Earth to retrieve Doctor Durand Durand from the planet Tau Ceti in order to save the Earth. Durand Durand is the evil inventor of a weapon called the Positronic Ray. She meets a lot of other interesting people on her journey.

Refn will direct and executive produce the series. He called Barbarella “one of the ultimate counter-cultural characters.” He's currently finishing up his new film with Ryan Gosling, Only God Forgives

It will be very interesting to see how they adapt this story for the small screen, and who Refn ends up casting in the lead role. I've enjoyed the movies that the director has been making and it will be cool to see what his vision of this character is. What do yo think about Refn taking on this project?
