I don't know about you, but I was getting pumped up for David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises 2. The script was written by the original screenwriter Steven Knight and both Viggo Mortensen and Vincent Cassel were signed on to reprise their roles. The movie looked like it was actually going to happen! Unfortunately for us, the film production is dead, and it's not happening.
The news comes from The Playlist, who had the chance to talk to Cronenberg, and asked what he had lined up to direct next he bluntly said, "It was supposed to be Eastern Promises 2. But that's dead."
What damn shame! Apparently the studio just got cold feet, and wouldn't give it the official greenlight. According to the report, Cronenberg was still frustrated and in disbelief about it saying, "We were supposed to start shooting Eastern Promises 2 in October. [But] It's done... If you don't like it talk to James Schamus at Focus. It was his decision." It sounds like it was a last minute decision by the studio, and I wonder what made them change their mind.
Eastern Promises was such an incredible movie, it would have been great to see a sequel, and it sucks that at this point we'll never see it happen. Thanks a lot James Schmus at Focus.
