Joss Whedon to Bring S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Series to ABC
Disney has clearly found the right man to oversee the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Joss Whedon. With his recent deal, Whedon will be reigning over what goes through in movies and TV concerning the Marvel superheroes. With Guillermo del Toro still finishing Pacific Rim, it's clear we will NOT be seeing his Incredible Hulk series in *quite* a while. Now, Whedon will be detailing the action-packed missions of super-secret organization S.H.I.E.L.D. in a new TV series for ABC. He will be co-writing the show with his brother, Jed Whedon, and possibly direct the pilot. Production will begin as soon as possible.
As a series, this is immensely more interesting than an Incredible Hulk series could be and here's why: I'm not buying for a second that the Hulk of the new show would be the same Hulk from Avengers as promised. There's no way the budget would allow that and plus, you would once AGAIN have to recast Bruce Banner and I'm sure we're all sick of that happening by now. How S.H.I.E.L.D. would work as show is that you can have a central S.H.I.E.L.D. figure like Maria Hill (Colbie Smulders) and have Samuel L. Jackson guest star every once in a while as Nick Fury. This would apply to MCU cast members like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth. This could also open the door for other characters to get a television series like the recently-acquired-by-Disney Daredevil/Matt Murdock, a character I've been campaigning for, She-Hulk/Jennifer Walters. Not to mention, Whedon and TV just go hand-in-hand even if prior series like Firefly and Dollhouse didn't last too long. However, Whedon just made the third highest-grossing film of all time.
I think a full order of a first season is practically guaranteed. If this is the direction Disney/Marvel is going in, with Whedon in charge, count me in! I couldn't be more excited and hope we get to see/hear more on S.H.I.E.L.D. soon!
