THE DARK EYE: DEMONICON Preview

Games by Jacob Spafford

I recently sat in on a preview of Kalypso's upcoming ARPG, Demonicon.  The game is set in the Dark Eye world, and if you haven't heard of that, it's basically Germany's equivalent of Dungeons and Dragons: a pen and paper RPG that's been around long enough to have spawned a vast setting for many other games.

This newest addition to the world of Aventuria takes place in a land of demon-corrupted warlords. The player will face moral dilemmas, and your choices will affect the story and the development of your character. There are skill trees that affect things like combat, speech, and demonic blood magic.

From what I saw of the preview, some of the character interaction seemed stilted and awkward, and some of the character models were in the uncanny valley of creepiness (but what could I have expected? This plagues many RPGs). If this game succeeds, it will be on the merits of its storytelling and character development, since that's where their focus seems to be. If they can successfully implement a system where your choices are difficult and have meaningful consequences, this could be a really fun game.

There should be a preview video available soon, but here are some more images from the event:
