Guillermo Del Toro Discusses PACIFIC RIM and New Photos Revealed

Guillermo Del Toro recently did an in depth interview with Total Film regarding his incredible looking sci-fi epic Pacific Rim. In it he discussed the visual effects, 3D, the character Idris Elba plays, the films directors cut, and the sequel he's already working on. I've also included a few new photos from the film as well including concept art.

I have no doubt that this movie is going to be a huge success, and I can't wait see these giant robots battle giant monsters on the big screen. Here's what the director had to say about the VFX and the 3D conversion of the film,

We're 30 to 40 percent into the 3D conversion and that's going really good. We've done 99 percent of all the animation of Industrial Light & Magic, and we have rendered and finished about 33 percent of the shots. So the big animation haul is basically over. We have about a dozen shots left to animate.

He went on to discuss the importance of Idris Elba's character,

Idris could be just standing there saying 'whatever' and he has a magnetic center. I needed him to root the whole adventure, morally and ethically.

When talking about the directors cut of the film he said, "I did my director's cut and showed it to the studio. It got a great reaction." I've heard several people say that that the film is amazing, and that it will be blowing peoples minds. The director is asked at one point what he would have thought about the film if he saw it at one of the local theaters while he was growing up, and this was his reply,

I tell you, I'd have exploded in a ball of blood, guts and shit! I would have exploded like that guy in Scanners! And basically I did that every day on the set.

That about says everything we need to know about how awesome the movie is going to be. I can only hope that I explode into a ball of blood, guts and shit! As far as the sequel goes, he's already working on it!

Travis and I have been working on it. We co-wrote the screenplay on this first one, and now we’re hard at work at doing the second one. We want to take however long it takes to really find out the idea and try to bridge something that really makes the mythology roll. And in the meantime, I’m going to shoot Crimson Peak, which is a ghost story. The great thing about Legendary is they’re willing to take it to completion in the right way. They’re giving us the leeway. Imagine that we’re generating the comic book. We’re learning more about the [Pacific Rim] world we’re creating day by day.

I haven't seen the first one yet, but I'm already excited for the sequel! Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris ElbaRinko KikuchiCharlie Day, and Ron Perlman. The film is set to hit theaters July 12th, 2013.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even theJaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee —who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
