GRUMPY CAT Internet Sensation Gets a Movie
There are some things that I manage to avoid on the Internet. I've never heard of this Grumpy Cat until today, but apparently it's a big thing, which seems absolutely ridiculous. What's even more ridiculous is the fact that Hollywood is going to take this stupidly popular Internet cat sensation and turn it into a family style comedy.
The movie will be based on a cat named Tardar Sauce, who's a scowling feline that became famous for appearing in memes. She won Meme of the Year at the 2013 Webby Awards. Ugh. Deadline also mentions a bunch of the cat's other achievements:
Grumpy Cat was named the most influential cat of 2012 by MSNBC, a most important Meme of 2012 by Mashable, and has appeared on such TV shows including Today, Good Morning America, CBS Evening News, Anderson Cooper Live, VH1 Morning Buzz and The Soup. In March, Grumpy Cat was deemed the star of South by Southwest-i by news outlets. The appearances drew lines of thousands of people that spanned for blocks. Grumpy Cat received more social mentions in four days than anyone else at SXSWi.vThe cat’s official Facebook has more than 930,000 likes and a weekly reach well over 2 million. The official YouTube Channel has over 120,000 subscribers and over 20 million views. Grumpy Cat stars in a collection of webisodes in partnership with Friskies and the Will Kitty Play With It series. Grumpy Cat merchandise sells at Walmart, Hot Topic, Thinkgeek and many other retail stores.
I seriously can't believe this. It's a cat! All cats look grumpy! I guess a movie was bound to happen, but I don't get it. Here's the cat's bio:
Grumpy Cat became an internet sensation after her photo was posted on Reddit on September 22, 2012. It was suggested that the original photo was photoshopped, so we posted a few videos on YouTube. The videos went viral and her popularity has continued to increase!
We aren’t exactly sure about Grumpy Cats breed; but she looks nothing like her mother or father. She looks similar to a Ragdoll or Showshoe; but there have never been any of that breed around the house. Her mom is a calico domestic short hair cat and her father has grey and white stripes. (Though I suppose there could be a different father, promiscuous cats you know…)
Tardar Sauce [visits] the vet regularly and she has a clean bill of health. Her petite size and famous face is likely due to feline dwarfism and her rear end wobbles a bit when she walks due to this; otherwise she is a perfect little kitty! She is not a munchkin cat and was not bred purposefully from other munchkin cats. (We don’t breed kitty’s and her parents are normal sized domestic short hair cats.)
