I'm happy to report that Guillermo del Toro still hasn't given up on his Frankenstein film project. He's said several times already that this would be the most personal film he'll ever make.
He revealed in a recent interview with Daily Telegraph (Via: The Playlist) that he is looking to sign Benedict Cumberbatch to star in the film! The actor was recently cast in Del Toro's upcoming haunted house horror film Crimson Peak.
There's no word on whether Cumberbatch would play the creature or the doctor in Frankenstein, but we do know that Del Toro wanted Doug Jones take on the role of the creature and has already done test shoots with the director. Cumberbatch could do either role as he's already played both of them in in the Danny Boyle stage play opposite Jonny Lee Miller. If both actors end up in the film that would be amazing.
I really want to see this movie happen, but who knows what Universal will do, especially since Fox is already making a Frankenstein film with Daniel Radcliffe as Igor, which is set to to be released in the fall of 2014. I'm sure it will happen one day, but the sooner the better.
Del Toro also gave an update on his big screen adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five saying,
"Charlie Kaufman and I talked for about an hour-and-a-half and came up with a perfect way of doing the book. I love the idea of the Trafalmadorians [the aliens of 'Slaughterhouse-Five'] -- to be 'unstuck in time,' where everything is happening at the same time. And that's what I want to do. It's just a catch-22. The studio will make it when it''s my next movie, but how can I commit to it being my next movie until there's a screenplay? Charlie Kaufman is a very expensive writer! I'll work it out."
There are so many projects that Del Toro has been working on over the years that we would love to see made. It would be great to see some of these long gestated projects actually move into development at some point.
What do you think about Cumberbatch starring in Frankenstein? Which role you like to see him play?
