Charlie Day Originally Planned as Villain for PACIFIC RIM 2
Warning: This post contains spoilers!
As Pacific Rim continues to be a smash hit internationally, speculation continues among fans as to what the sequels may hold, or if they are even happening. In a recent interview with Crave Online, Charlie Day said there were on-set discussions of the possibility of his character actually playing the villain in the next film, although he's not sure if that's still the plan. Here's his direct quote....
“I remember when I first met with him that he liked the idea of Newt becoming a bit of a villain in the second film...But, I think over the course of making the film, and the way the character resonated with the audience, I don’t think he would want to turn him into a villain now, but I really have no idea.”
I have to admit that when I was watching the film I thought Newt (Day's character) was going to become the villain! The whole Kaiju brain-linking made me think that he could serve as a potential gateway, or perhaps be able to control a Kaiju much like the characters control the Jaegers. I really hope to see a sequel to this film eventually. Corny as it was, it's ranked as my second favorite film of the summer and a breath of fresh air from the nonstop sequels we've been subjected to in the geek world here lately. I know I'm not alone in this!
