Will James Wan Direct INSIDIOUS 3 or Is He Done with Horror?
I don't know why, but a lot of the reviews I've seen for Insidious: Chapter 2 haven't been too kind. I personally loved the movie, and I consider it one of the best sequels that has been made. I can't wait to see what is being planned for Insidious: Chapter 3! They set it up at the end of chapter 2, but it looks like a third film isn't set in stone yet. Even if they do move forward with another movie, it's looking like director James Wan isn't interested in coming back to direct, which would be a damn shame.
Producer Jason Blum did a couple of interviews that shed some light on the subject. Cinemablend asked about a third film, and if he and Wan had a plan. This was his response,
"I would love to make a third film, but James and Leigh will not hear of it until this movie comes out. So, I’d be thrilled to make a third movie, but there is no current plan to make a third movie at all. Only in my head!"
Insidious: Chapter 2 had a great opening this weekend, pulling in over $41 million, which is way more than the $28 million the first film made in its opening weekend. Is that good enough for Wan to want to come back to make another one? Maybe not. Back in July the director gave an interview with Moviefone in which he said,
“I’m going to go on record and say I am finished with the horror genre. Conjuring and Insidious 2 are my two last scary movies.Say it ain't so, Wan! Say it ain't so! I would hate it if he gave up horror movies completely. Look, I can understand him wanting to work in different film genres, and I think he should! He goes on to explain,
"I spent the last ten years of my life doing this. It’s time for a change, for goodness sake!...Hollywood puts you in a box. If you do a successful comedy, then you’re known as The Comedy Guy. If you do a successful car chase movie, then you become that guy. So I’m a student of cinema, so I just want to make sure I get the chance to make other kinds of films.”
I can understand that. He's insanely talented, and I think he'll end up giving us some incredible movies over the years, but he shouldn't give up on the horror genre. I love horror movies, and he's giving us the best ones right now. If he stops making them, were going to be left with a bunch of lazy, mediocre horror films.
Hopefully he won't give up on it completely, but if he does, I'm sure going to miss him.
What do you think about a potential Insidious: Chapter 3 or Wan not wanting to make horror movies anymore?
