2D Notebook-Style Art That Looks Like 3D Sculptures
A couple of years ago we shared an amazing series of art that comic artist Jim Rugg did on spiral notebook paper using nothing but ballpoint pens. Every piece was packed with an insane amount of detail and depth, as well as a hypnotic amount of color. I hadn’t seen anyone really attempt to create worthwhile art on notebook paper since. That is, until I came across the work of artist João A. Carvalho, who mostly skips the color but adds a whole new level of dimension with his faux notebook paper art. Carvalho uses subtle shading and manipulates blue notebook-style lines to create the illusion that his 2D drawings are popping off the page.
I’m not sure if Carvalho drew wide rule or college rule sized lines. I do know, though, that his teacher is going to be super pissed that he didn’t write his name and date in the upper right hand corner. He also didn’t show his work, so the teacher might also think he just copied these off his neighbor.
